Upgrades to Substation on Whitehall Street

The project is being undertaken to expand electrical capacity to meet future demand and ensure reliable power for our customers.

The existing substation is located in Lynbrook on both sides of Whitehall Street, between Hendrickson Avenue and the Long Island Rail Road tracks. The project entails the installation of new substation equipment on LIPA property within the current fence line of the substation as well as the installation of underground cable in Whitehall Street between both sections of the substation. The project is being undertaken to expand electrical capacity to help meet future demand and ensure reliable power for our customers.

Substation Work
New equipment will be installed within the substation fence line on the northwest side of Whitehall Street. Vegetation and trees within the substation will be cleared and the area will be regraded for the new equipment. New plantings will be installed along the fenceline between the substation and the adjacent Liberty Water property.

Project Timeline
Clearing on substation property is expected to occur in January 2026. Active construction is expected to begin in January 2026 and will be conducted periodically until expected completion in June 2027. Crews are expected to work Monday through Friday, during normal business hours.

  • Will there be any traffic interruptions?
    There will be minimal traffic and parking disruptions in the project area. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flaggers and signage at the work sites, as needed.
