Project Specifics

PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class system reliability by expanding electrical capacity to meet the needs of the communities it serves, today and in the future. PSEG Long Island’s electric grid consists of three primary elements: Electric transmission lines that carry high-voltage power from generation sources; substations that receive the electricity from the transmission lines and step it down to a lower voltage; and distribution lines that carry the lower-voltage electricity into our neighborhoods.

New development at Belmont Park, including the construction of a brand new arena for the New York Islanders, development of a 350,000-square foot retail and entertainment complex, and the construction of a new hotel, will increase electrical demand beyond the capacity of existing substations. We have worked diligently with the State and the project developer to plan for a new Belmont Substation and associated transmission and distribution system upgrades to augment current power capacity so we can continue to provide reliable power to the community.

Upcoming Work

Crews will be strengthening our transmission system along Plainfield Avenue between Vandewater Avenue and Miller Avenue. Dates and times are subject to change based on circumstances including weather:

  • Saturday, Feb. 15, between 5 p.m. through 5 a.m. Feb. 16
  • Sunday, Feb. 16, starting at 5 p.m., through 5 a.m. Feb. 17

Project Scope

Start Date: August 2019
The proposed project consists of several components, including:

  • Construction of the Belmont Substation on the Belmont Park property
  • Replacement of existing overhead transmission poles and wires
  • Installation of two new underground transmission cables
  • Installation of five new underground distribution feeders
  • Overhead distribution pole replacements, and the replacement, removal, and/or installation of pole-top equipment including transformers, switching equipment and electrical wire.

 
Upcoming Work
:
Crews will be working on Plainfield Avenue between Vandewater Avenue and Miller Avenue. Dates and times are subject to change and will be dependent on weather:

  • February 1st between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.*
  • February 8th between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.*
  • February 9th starting at 5 p.m. through February 10th at 5 a.m.*

 
Distribution Work

New underground distribution feeder lines will be installed, exiting the proposed Belmont Substation and continuing through Belmont Park to the new development. This feeder layout will connect to the existing overhead distribution poles on Hempstead Turnpike. There will also be one distribution feeder exiting the proposed Belmont Substation and continuing through Belmont Park, underneath the LIRR to Superior Road just west of 242nd Street. 

Substation Work
The proposed Belmont Substation will be located in the western portion of Belmont Park, near the Cross Island Parkway.

Transmission Work
Replacement of existing overhead transmission poles, installation of new transmission poles and wires, and the installation of two new underground transmission cables to support a new substation.

Location of the site or right-of-way:
These activities will be conducted in two general areas:

  • Along a portion of Plainfield Avenue between Miller Avenue and Vandewater Avenue.
  • Within Belmont Park.

 
Description of the utility transmission facilities to be built:

  • Overhead:
    Along Plainfield Avenue, construction specialists will replace eight wood poles that range from approximately 34 - 47 feet in height above grade with wood poles that are approximately 52 – 70 feet in height above grade. In addition, crews will install two new wood poles in Belmont Park measuring approximately 70 feet in height above grade.
  • Underground:
    Crews will install two transmission lines within Belmont Park that will connect the overhead transmission facilities along Plainfield Avenue to the proposed Belmont Substation

What is the overall timeline for the project?
Construction is expected to begin in August 2019 and be completed by October 2020.

Will there be tree trimming?
Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line.

Will there be any power outages?
In the event that a brief outage is required, you will be notified in advance.

Will there be any traffic interruptions?
There will be minor traffic disruptions along the route. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work sites, as needed.
