Project Overview

This project was completed in April 2020.

PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class electric reliability to you and to hardening the system to better withstand extreme weather like heat waves and storms like Superstorm Sandy.  The upgrades we’re working on are necessary to keep pace with the growing demand for electricity in your area. The work being completed will ensure greater reliability for your neighborhood.

PSEG Long Island will be upgrading the electric distribution infrastructure to improve reliability in East Rockaway, Lynbrook, and Malverne. The upgraded overhead primary wires and poles, along with new underground cable, will help ensure that we can provide safe and reliable electric service to businesses and residents in the area.

Crews working on the infrastructure will:

• Inspect the system to ensure compliance with the most current standards
• Upgrade equipment, where necessary, to maintain or improve reliability
• Inspect and replace poles that do not meet our standards with poles of similar height
• Convert overhead design from single-wire to three-wire configuration. This will create connection points to adjacent circuits and provide backup supply in emergency/contingency situations
• Replace overhead primary wire with a stronger, more resilient wire
• Install underground cable to connect two circuits
  
  

Project Route

Crews will replace poles along the following streets:

• Broadway between Nottingham Road and Alnwick Road
• Nassau Boulevard between Hempstead Avenue and Rolling Street
• Rolling Street near the intersection of Nassau Boulevard
• Hempstead Avenue between Cedar Road and Lexington Avenue
• Chestnut Street between Lakeview Avenue and Oak Street
• Vincent Avenue between Walnut Street and Ella Street
• Cambridge Street north of Lakeview Avenue
• Earle Avenue between Walnut Street and Merrick Road
• Walnut Street between Vincent Avenue and Denton Avenue
• Ella Street between Earle Avenue and Vincent Avenue
• Ocean Avenue between Centre Avenue and Ryder Place
• Woods Avenue between Lester Drive and Atlantic Avenue
• Carman Avenue between Scranton Avenue and Main Street
• Main Street between Howland Road and Walnut Road
• Emmet Avenue between Wesley Drive and Cail Drive
   

 Our crews will install a new underground cable in Lynbrook along Earle Avenue between Sunrise Highway and St. James Place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the timeline for the project?
Crews will begin work in June.

What are the work hours?
Crews are expected to work Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Will there be tree trimming?
Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): 8 feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the line.

Will there be any power outages?
In the event that a brief outage is required, all affected customers will be notified in advance.

Will there be any traffic interruptions?
There may be traffic and parking disruptions while the work is performed along the project route. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flaggers and signage at the work sites, as needed. Local officials will be notified in advance regarding any traffic concerns.

Do you have permission to do this work?
PSEG Long Island is in the process of securing the proper local permits.
