PSEG Long Island Recognizes National Energy Assistance Day (Feb. 2) by Encouraging Customers to Learn About Money-Saving Programs
(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Feb. 2, 2026) PSEG Long Island is recognizing National Energy Assistance Day, Feb 2, 2026, by encouraging its customers to learn about available financial programs and money-saving tips – particularly relevant now with the frigid winter temperatures.
PSEG Long Island encourages its customers to find out if they qualify for available assistance programs and payment options. The company’s advocacy team is ready to help whether it is over the phone, through email, in an interactive webinar, or during one-on-one meetings in local communities across Long Island and the Rockaways.
Personalized financial assistance available for customers struggling to pay bills
PSEG Long Island invites customers facing financial difficulty to reach out. The company’s Advocacy team partners with social service agencies and performs neighborhood outreach to assist customers who have fallen behind on their bills. Advocates hold open hours throughout Long Island and the Rockaways at libraries, government offices and community centers where they help customers enroll in PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance Program. They also help customers apply for state and federal programs that help people struggling with utility bills. In addition, the Advocacy team is currently holding twice monthly webinars to educate its customers about the financial assistance available and how to qualify.
The next two webinars are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5, at 3 PM and Thursday, Feb. 26, at 3 PM. Pre-registration is required at: pseg.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_wca8mogZRp-m_FhPYXEM8Q. For the most up-to-date schedule of community outreach events, follow PSEG Long Island on social media at facebook.com/psegli.
Customers can also contact PSEG Long Island’s consumer advocacy hotline 8:30 AM – 4 PM on weekdays at 631-755-3407 or via email at Consumeradvocacyli@psegliny.com.
Available residential programs:
- PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance Program is available to customers who qualify for one of 10 non-utility related state or federal assistance programs, including HEAP, SNAP and Medicaid. The Household Assistance Program provides a bill credit of at least $45 each month for 18 months. More information is available at psegliny.com/assistance.
- New York State’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) provides heating fuel grants to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size and fuel used to heat their home. PSEG Long Island representatives are able to assist customers with the HEAP application process.
- New York State’s Emergency HEAP provides urgent help for low-income households facing heating crises, such as utility shut-offs or running out of fuel.
- Project Warmth is an emergency assistance program supported by PSEG Long Island and administered by United Way of Long Island. The program aims to help low-income families and individuals as Long Island’s only non-governmental, island-wide emergency energy fund that helps financially struggling customers pay their heating bill. Call 2-1-1 for more information.
- PSEG Long Island’s Residential Energy Affordability Partnership (REAP) provides income-eligible customers with a free energy audit in their home, providing personalized guidance and energy education focused on energy use patterns, energy saving tips, and referrals for other assistance programs. Customers may qualify for insulation, smart thermostats, and other energy-saving measures installed in their homes for free, and receive a $50 bill credit and $30 voucher to the PSEG Long Island Online Marketplace.
- Similar to REAP but for all customers regardless of income or the home’s heating source, PSEG Long Island offers free whole house energy assessments. During a home audit, customers are educated how to reduce energy usage and learn about exclusive rebates and financing, which may include insulation, heating and ventilation.
- PSEG Long Island offers payment plans and extensions for customers with specific needs - from a sudden crisis to a long-term health issue. A Financial Hardship Agreement is a one-time arrangement for customers experiencing severe financial hardship who are unable to pay a past-due balance. The agreement allows customers to pay off existing, past due balances in monthly installments and not be at risk of termination as long as they meet the terms of the agreement.
- Balanced Billing is available to all PSEG Long Island customers and provides electric bills that are the same amount every month. The cost of electric usage for an entire year is projected and divided into 12 equal payments. Plans are reviewed each year and each new plan year is based on a new projection.
Tips to lower bills:
- Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money.
- Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room.
- Lower your thermostat by just 1 degree to potentially reduce your heating bill. Lowering it 2 degrees during the day and 5 to 10 degrees at night will save even more.
- Use a programmable thermostat. ENERGY STAR® estimates that homes with high heating and cooling bills, as well as homes that are unoccupied for much of the day, can save approximately $100 a year with an ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostat. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats.
- Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs because, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer.
- Customers on a Time-of-Day rate can save money and energy by running dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric vehicles and other high-energy-use appliances outside of peak hours, which are weekdays 3 – 7 PM.
- Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage in cold and hot months. Rebates are available from PSEG Long Island.
