Project Details

This project was completed in March 2020.   

While several substations currently serve the area, building a new substation, reconfiguring nearby distribution circuits, and reconductoring and reinsulating existing lines will significantly increase reliability and power quality to the community as it grows and reduce the risk of prolonged service disruptions, especially during heat waves and storms.

As always, PSEG Long Island is working closely with local officials on this project, keeping them informed and working to minimize potential disruptions.

Project Location

The new substation will be located on the north side of Rabro Drive East, east of Wheeler Road (Route 111). In addition, PSEG Long Island crews will perform overhead and underground line upgrades on the following streets:

• Northfield Road
• Veterans Memorial Highway/Smithtown Bypass (Route 347)

• Jericho Turnpike (Route 25)

Project Timeline

• Winter 2018
  Demolition and removal of existing structures at substation location
  Begin clearing of land / installation of construction fence
• Spring 2018
  Begin concrete foundation work
  Begin work on overhead and underground lines in Hauppauge area
• Summer 2018 – Begin construction of the substation
• Summer 2019 – Energize initial section of the substation
• Fall 2019 – Complete landscaping of property
• Spring 2019 through Winter 2020 – Complete construction of substation and associated line upgrades

 
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the work hours?
Crews will work daily, Monday through Friday, from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional weekend work may be required.

Will the project include new poles or pole replacements?
New distribution poles will be installed and some existing distribution poles will be replaced at various points along the project route. These poles will be made of wood and will be no more than five feet taller than existing distribution poles.

Will the project include tree trimming?
Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages and pose safety risks. As we expand and improve our electric circuits, we will trim trees, where necessary, following our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication): eight feet to each side; 12 feet above; and 10 feet below the conductor.

Will there be any traffic interruptions?
PSEG Long Island does not anticipate any traffic interruptions. However, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work sites, as needed, to minimize traffic interruptions should they arise.

Will there be any power outages?
PSEG Long Island does not anticipate any planned power outages associated with this project. However, if the need for a planned outage arises, we will notify customers in advance.
