Project Specifics

This project was completed in March 2020.   

PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class electric reliability by hardening the electric system to better withstand extreme weather like heat waves and storms like Superstorm Sandy. The upgrades we are working on are necessary to keep pace with the growing demand for electricity in Hauppauge. During the next couple of months, you will see crews working in your area strengthening the system.

Underground

  • Installation of underground cable through directional drill

 
Overhead

  • North Wheeler Road Portion: Upgrade overhead wire, replace wood distribution poles with new wood distribution poles, add one new wood distribution pole, upgrade equipment and remove two capacitor banks
  • Northfield Road Portion: Upgrade overhead wire, replace wood distribution poles with new wood distribution poles, add one new wood distribution pole, upgrade equipment and install an underground cable dip
  • Old Willets Path Portion: Upgrade overhead wire, replace wood distribution poles with new wood distribution poles, add one new wood distribution pole and upgrade equipment

 
Project Routes

Underground

  • Two feeders run underground out of the new Kings Highway Substation on the northeast corner where Wheeler Road (Route 111) and Rabro Drive intersect. The feeders will run west on Rabro Drive to Old Willets Path. One feeder goes north on Simeon-Woods Road to the intersection at Kings Highway on the west side and another continues north on Old Willets Path to Veterans Memorial Highway.

 
Overhead

  • North Wheeler Road Portion: Intersection of Rabro Drive and Wheeler Road running north on Wheeler Road to Veterans Memorial Highway.
  • Northfield Road Portion: Intersection of Kings Highway and Plymouth Road running north on Northfield Road to Old Townline Road and Veterans Highway. Additional work at intersection of Salem Court and Ridgefield Road on Pole 11.
  • Old Willets Path Portion: Intersection of Veterans Highway and Old Willets Path running south along Old Willets to Engineers Road.

  • What is the timeline for the project?
    Construction is expected to begin mid-October and take about four months to complete.
  • What are the work hours?
    Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Will there be tree trimming?
    There will be light tree trimming with this project, however work will be minimal and follow our utility best practice model (ANSI A300 standards as well as the Best Management Practices Tree Pruning publication).
  • Will the project include new poles or pole replacements?
    Yes. The work will include approximately 80 pole replacements as well as 9 new wood distribution poles.
  • Will there be any power outages?
    We do not anticipate any power outages related to this project. In the event that a brief outage is required, all affected customers will be notified in advance of any power outage.
  • Will there be any traffic interruptions?
    There will be minimal traffic disruptions along the project route. To ensure traffic moves safely, PSEG Long Island will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work sites, as needed
