Press Release
PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Monday, Feb. 23, 9 PM
(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Feb. 23, 2026) PSEG Long Island continues to make strong progress, restoring power to more than 93% of the more than 44,000 customers affected by Winter Storm Hernando as of 9 PM.
- The electric system held up well amid snow accumulations that exceeded 2 feet and peak wind gusts that topped 70 mph in some locations.
- As of 9:30 PM Monday, PSEG Long Island is reporting 2,379 customers are without power. We expect the majority of customers currently without power to be restored by noon tomorrow.
- Crews will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible, 24 hours a day in rotating 16-hour shifts, until all outages are restored.
- PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.
- PSEG Long Island’s tree crews have cleared 151 fallen trees and 107 large limbs during this restoration.
- PSEG Long Island has more than 600 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors and other field personnel to address outages.
- All other PSEG Long Island employees are also supporting the restoration efforts, including dispatching crews, staffing call centers, maintaining IT support systems and handling other logistics.
- In addition, approximately 290 mutual aid personnel arrived yesterday and are on site to help address outages today.
- Information about PSEG Long Island’s restoration process is available at psegliny.com/Outages/StormPrepandRestoration/RestorationProcess.
Customer Safety:
- Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
- Electric current passes easily through water or wet snow. If you encounter a pool of slush or standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
- Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
