Press Release

PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Monday, Sept. 28, 8 AM

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Sept. 28, 2026) As of 8 AM, PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 95% of customers affected by the gusty winds and heavy rain that brought down trees and heavy branches on wires, causing scattered power outages throughout PSEG Long Island’s service territory.

  • Currently, 6,108 of 1.2 million electric customers across Long Island and the Rockaways are without power.
  • Over the course of 72 hours, the storm caused more than 124,000 outages. The vast majority of customers who lost power are expected to have their service restored by the end of today.
  • The majority of outages are currently in Suffolk County.
  • Additional outages continued to come in overnight as more wind and rain affected Long Island and the Rockaways.
  • The storm damage was extensive. More than 1,150 trees and nearly 700 large branches fell.
  • More than 1,350 local and off-Island field workers are supporting the restoration.
  • Crews will continue to work safely to restore power as quickly as possible, in 16-hour shifts, until all outages are restored.
  • PSEG Long Island customers who are currently experiencing outages will continue to receive targeted communications about their restoration.
  • To ensure the safety of personnel in bucket trucks, strong winds may temporarily slow restoration efforts.
  • As electric service crews continue to assess damage, estimated times of restoration (ETRs) will be provided and refined.

  • Information about PSEG Long Island’s restoration process is available at psegliny.com/Outages/StormPrepandRestoration/RestorationProcess.
  • PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.

Customer Safety:

  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
  • Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
