South Manor Project - Town of Brookhaven
A Reliability Project
This project was completed in July 2015.
PSEG Long Island is committed to delivering best-in-class system reliability to our customers and to hardening the system to better withstand the types of extreme weather, like Superstorm Sandy. The South Manor Project meets the growing needs of local residents and strengthens the system. PSEG Long Island is working closely with local officials to minimize any potential disruptions to residents, manage traffic controls and replenish any disturbed vegetation.
The South Manor project was needed to ensure vital electric redundancy and to increase reliability to the area and followed a project route that encompassed:
- Sunrise Highway’s North Service Road between Railroad Avenue and Wading River Road
- Wading River Road between Sunrise Highway’s North Service Road and Brookfield Avenue
- Brookfield Avenue from Wading River Road south to Montauk Highway
Information on the Poles
- A total of 50 existing poles were replaced on this project
- 5 poles went from 40 feet to 45 feet
- 24 poles went from 35 feet to 40 feet
- 21 poles went from 35 feet to 45 feet
- Damaged/weak poles were replaced
- The actual height of the poles range from 34 to 39 feet from grade to top, as approximately six feet of each pole are buried underground
- The poles were stored in the Riverhead operating yard
PSEG Long Island actively participates in and adheres to the National Joint Utilities Notification system requirements. We are in regular contact with Verizon, Cablevision and Lightower Fiber, among others, and notify them when electric equipment and wires are removed, thereby enabling them to remove their wires and the poles.
We will trim trees that may interfere with the power lines. Pruning will be performed in accordance with ANSI A300 standards, as well as the Best Management Practices – Tree Pruning publication. To improve system reliability, the new PSEG Long Island clearance zone is 8’ to each side, 12’ above, and 10’ below the conductor(s).
- Trees growing near power lines significantly increase the chance of power outages
- Trees can cause downed lines and power outages on normal weather days and during storms
Optional Design Considerations
PSEG Long Island evaluated all other design options and determined that replacing the poles was the best and most cost-effective way to bring improved reliability to our customers in the area. The cost to underground wires and equipment is, generally, 3 – 4 times the cost of an overhead installation. Service restoration as a result of an underground cable fault is typically significantly longer than that of an overhead line fault (4-8 weeks vs. 1-2 days).
PSEG Long Island secured the proper NYSDOT permits.
