During Drive Electric Week, PSEG Long Island Reminds Customers They Can Save Green While Going Green

Company incentives, state and federal tax credits accelerate adoption of cleaner vehicles

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Sept. 28, 2021) PSEG Long Island is celebrating National Drive Electric Week by reminding customers that they can get tax credits on electric cars and rebates on smart chargers to help increase the adoption rate and reduce New York’s carbon footprint.

As part of its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), New York State has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40% of 1990 levels by the year 2030.

According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, transportation, including cars, buses and trucks, accounts for 36% of the carbon emissions in New York State. Long Island already leads the state in electric vehicle adoption, with more than 23,000 of the 81,000 electric vehicles registered in New York State located in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“Electric vehicles are growing in popularity. They’re cleaner than internal combustion vehicles, they’re easy to charge, and they’re available in an increasing number of models from different manufacturers,” said Michael Voltz, PSEG Long Island’s director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables. “While Long Island and the Rockaways should be proud that we are at the forefront, electric vehicles still only represent 2% of the cars and trucks registered in our area. Imagine the positive environmental impact if all of these internal combustion vehicles were electric instead.”

Earlier this month, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill banning sales of new gas-powered passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks in New York State by 2035.

Additionally, President Joe Biden last month issued an executive order aimed at making half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 electric, with backing from the biggest U.S. automakers.

Breaking down the barriers
To help New York State meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals, PSEG Long Island has been hard at work developing solutions to the most common barriers to electric vehicle ownership:
