Press Release
PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Sunday, Sept. 27, 8 AM
(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Sept. 27, 2026) PSEG Long Island crews worked through the night in challenging conditions as the powerful coastal storm continues to bring heavy rain and strong wind gusts across the service area, downing trees and wires.
- As of 8 AM, PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 82,000 customers across Long Island and the Rockaways who have been affected by the storm since 7 AM Friday.
- Currently, 23,668 of 1.2 million electric customers across Long Island and the Rockaways are without power.
- Crews will continue to work 16-hour shifts safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored.
- The severe weather has brought down more than 700 trees and 440 large branches, which have taken down utility poles and electric wires.
- All PSEG Long Island employees have mobilized to support the restoration efforts, including more than 850 lineworkers, tree trimmers, surveyors and other field personnel.
- Nearly 340 off-Island workers are assisting with the restoration efforts until the end of the storm, with another 80 expected today.
- Outages are scattered across the service area and the hardest hit areas are currently in Suffolk County.
- The storm has brought wind gusts of more than 60 mph in some areas.
- Additional outages are expected as we continue to see gusty winds and heavy rain throughout the weekend.
- To ensure the safety of personnel in bucket trucks, strong winds may temporarily slow restoration efforts.
- As electric service crews continue to assess damage, estimated times of restoration (ETRs) will be provided and refined.
- Information about PSEG Long Island’s restoration process is available at psegliny.com/Outages/StormPrepandRestoration/RestorationProcess.
- PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.
Customer Safety:
- Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
- Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
- Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
