Press Release

Prepared for Snowstorm and Extreme Cold

PSEG Long Island is committed to providing excellent service while working safely to restore potential power outages

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Jan. 22, 2026) PSEG Long Island is prepared for a weather system predicted to bring heavy snowfall and extremely cold temperatures to Long Island and the Rockaways beginning late Saturday evening and potentially lasting into Monday.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 20’s or below throughout the weekend. While the powdery snow that comes with extreme cold does not typically pose a threat to the electrical system, the storm is likely to create hazardous driving conditions, icy roads and reduced visibility, which can result in vehicles colliding with utility poles and damaging equipment.

PSEG Long Island has personnel ready to respond safely and as quickly as possible throughout the storm.

“While significant snowstorms can disrupt some aspects of everyday life, PSEG Long Island is confident and prepared to respond to any outages it may bring. We continue to monitor this weather system and have performed system and logistic checks to ensure any customers who may be affected will have their power restored safely and as quickly as possible.”

-  Michael Sullivan, Vice President of Electric Operations, PSEG Long Island

PSEG Long Island encourages customers to take the time now to prepare (psegliny.com/safetyandreliability/stormsafety) ahead of a weather event – including knowing how to report an outage and how to stay safe and connected to PSEG Long Island during winter weather.

Customer Safety:

  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Please stay as far away as possible from them, and do not drive over or stand near them. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
  • Electric current passes easily through water or wet snow. If you encounter a pool of slush or standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
