In terms of more visible action, you might see us replacing existing electric meters with new Smart Meters. A Smart Meter offers two-way, automated communications between the meter and the utility.

PSEG Long Island applies multiple layers of security controls and processes designed to identify and protect against potential system vulnerabilities posed by people, technology, and operations. PSEG Long Island adheres to industry standards such as Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) set by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and uses state of the art cyber security tools such as cryptographic methods approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Additionally, PSEG Long Island actively participates in collaborative associations and research forums with other utilities, academic institutions, government entities and vendors to ensure that our security architecture and processes continue to deter future threats.
PSEG Long Island reviews factory test results and performs its own laboratory and field-operation quality-control testing to ensure that all meters, including Smart Meters, are safe, accurate and functional.
Yes. The Smart Meter digital display will cycle through four different screens. Look for the screen that displays "001" on the left and “kWh” on the right – the five-digits in between are your reading. Keep in mind that the online MySmartEnergy tool provides easy access to far more detailed usage information right from your computer or mobile device.
No, the meter will remain at the location at which it was originally installed, just as a traditional meter would.
Smart meters transmit data only four times per day with relatively weak radio signals as compared to those emitted by cell phones, baby monitors and laptop computers with wireless Internet connections. Radio waves from a Smart Meter, at a distance of 10 feet, are only about one one-thousandth (.001) as strong as those of a typical cell phone. To match the impact of radio wave exposure from a typical cell phone in one month, it would require more than 1,000 years of exposure to a Smart Meter.
No. The Smart Meter will have no impact on the charging of electric vehicles. It will record the energy used by the charging station just as it would any other appliance in your home.
Yes. As of August 1, 2022, customers with a non-communicating digital meter will have to pay a monthly service fee of $11.53. The fee is calculated at $0.38 per day and will vary based on total days billed per cycle.
