The "Best Deal" on Electricity

Doug is winning on TOU

Doug C. of East Hampton got the best deal on electricity, saving almost $250 in the first nine months of being on Time of Use (TOU). How did Doug get the best deal? What is he doing to save so much money? How can you get the deal Doug got?

“I called them up (PSEG Long Island), we figured out my usage, and we worked together to get the best TOU plan for me.” Doug is a self-professed tech geek who’s very savvy with numbers. Like all of us, Doug wanted to avoid paying high electric bills and, instead, save his hard-earned money to spend on whatever made him the happiest. After hearing about PSEG Long Island’s new TOU plans, he did his homework and learned that the program would deliver the savings he wanted at the best deal on electricity.

Doug chose the TOU rate plan that suited his needs, knowing he could switch plans at any time.

“I like the control. I'm saving money with no impact on anything I want to do. So, I thought … I’ll try it out for a few months. I know they let you come back to standard rates if you want to, or switch your rate plan if you want to.”

How is Doug saving so much money?

Doug said that it’s easy to use TOU. “I just set it and forget it,” he said, acknowledging that it took a few minutes to reset the timers on things like his AC, pool pump and car charger.

  • Use the most energy-consuming appliances (AC, washing machine, dishwasher, etc.) during off-peak times (for most plans that is mornings and early afternoons between 7 A.M. and 3 P.M. and evenings from 8 P.M. to 11 P.M.).
  • Set pool pumps to stop at 4 p.m.
  • Charge EV overnight
  • Set the AC to cool before 4 p.m. and after 8 p.m., and let the house reach 78 degrees in between those times.

“You're not going to save much money by worrying about when you use your toaster. You're gonna worry about the high amperage appliances - like the dishwasher, washing machine, pool pump, EV, etc. Big things like those are saving me a lot.”

How can you get the deal Doug got?
A “TOU pioneer,” Doug was one of the first to recognize how great TOU is, so he called Customer Service to sign up. Now you can sign up via MyAccount. Simply log in, go to the rate comparison tool for help in determining which TOU rate plan will work best for you, and follow the prompts to switch to one of the new rates. Remember: At any time, you can return to standard rates or switch your rate plan. As we wrapped up our chat with Doug, we asked him if he had any other advice to share with people on the fence about TOU. Here’s what he said …

“We (Long Islanders) hear that the power company wants us to save money, and we just think we're gonna be ripped off. But that’s not the case. I know how the structure works. They don't want to keep on building plants. They want to shift up the usage, but I'm not sure most people are knowledgeable about that. I am definitely a fan of TOU! I would recommend it. I think it's fantastic. And I'm very happy that I did it.”
