Commack’s Frank Walsh Recognized as “Good Samaritan”
The PSEG Long Island Lineworker spends every Friday helping to feed those who are food-insecure – even on his birthday, which is Good Samaritan Day (March 13, 2020)
(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – March 9, 2020) – The day after his 31-year work anniversary, PSEG Long Island lineworker Frank Walsh will spend Good Samaritan Day (March 13, 2020), which also happens to be his birthday, as he does every Friday morning – giving back to his community.
At 8 am. nearly every Friday of the year, in heat, cold, rain and snow, Walsh, of Commack, arrives at a parking lot in Central Islip. There he meets an Island Harvest truck filled with donated food to support feeding our food-insecure neighbors. Walsh, part of the company’s Transmission & Distribution organization, is often joined by PSEG Long Island colleagues to carry boxes and bags of food and other donated items from the truck to the vehicles of about a dozen area food pantries, soup kitchens and other organizations that distribute the food Saturday mornings.
Good Samaritan Day, Friday, March 13, 2020, is the perfect day to celebrate Walsh and hundreds of PSEG Long Island employees who give back so much to their communities throughout the year.
“When I was approached by my supervisor several years ago to help, I didn’t know what Island Harvest was or what it did, and I had no idea there were as many hungry and homeless people on Long Island as there are,” said Walsh. “Since then I’ve been committed to do my little part on Friday mornings to help these organizations provide food for people who need it, and maybe one day, no one in our area will be hungry and we won’t have to be out here.”
Last year through its Community Partnership Program, PSEG Long Island employees gave more than 30,000 community service hours to support more than 500 not-for-profit organizations on Long Island and the Rockaways. Employees took part in more than 1,000 events and activities to help the causes they care about – fighting cancer, disease and illness, supporting victims of domestic violence, helping neighbors who are food insecure and homeless, assisting veterans, providing mentoring, supporting animal-related causes, and much more.
“I am so proud of our employees’ commitment to our communities in ways that go beyond providing safe, reliable power,” said Daniel Eichhorn, President and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our PSEG Long Island family is made up of people who live across our service area; people who care about their neighborhoods and towns and the same causes as our customers. Giving back to our communities is a core commitment of our company and I’d like to recognize Frank and all of our employees who continuously step up to do their part.”
For several events, hundreds of PSEG Long Island employees mobilized to participate, show support and raise much-needed dollars for a cause. Other activities included organizing a school supply drive that filled hundreds of backpacks with school supplies so local children could start the school year off right; made meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House; and helped a WWII veteran and former LI teacher with tasks around his home that had become difficult at 98 years old.
