Press Release

PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, 8:30 PM

  • PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 99.5% of customers affected by the gusty winds and heavy rain that brought down trees and heavy branches on wires, causing scattered power outages throughout PSEG Long Island’s service territory.
  • As of 8:15 PM, PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 26,400 customers since 4 PM Tuesday.
  • PSEG Long Island is reporting 124 of its approximately 1.2 million customers are currently without service.
  • We expect the majority of remaining customers affected by the storm will be restored tonight.
  • The storm caused widespread flooding in Ocean Beach on Fire Island. Some water entered the substation there, requiring PSEG Long Island to shut off the equipment for safety. Crews arrived on the ferry today, inspected the substation after the water receded and found no permanent damage to the equipment. PSEG Long Island personnel were able to energize the substation as of 2:14 PM and the customer load was restored as of 2:32 PM.
  • Crews will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored.
  • PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.

Customer Safety:

  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Please stay as far away as possible from them, and do not drive over or stand near them. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
  • Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
