Press Release
PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, 11:30 AM
- PSEG Long Island has made progress restoring customers after strong winds and heavy rain caused scattered power outages throughout PSEG Long Island’s service territory.
- PSEG Long Island is reporting 5,246 of its approximately 1.2 million customers are currently without service.
- As of 11:15 AM, PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 11,400 customers since 12:01 AM today.
- The hardest hit areas at this time include the townships of Oyster Bay, Brookhaven, North Hempstead and Huntington.
- Strong, gusty winds may continue into this afternoon.
- PSEG Long Island tree crews and contractors are in the process of addressing 120 downed trees and fallen limbs.
- Crews have been working overnight and will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored.
- All PSEG Long Island employees have mobilized to support the restoration efforts, including more than 900 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors and other field personnel. This includes the support of more than 180 mutual aid high voltage personnel.
- PSEG Long Island reminds customers that, for safety reasons, its crews are unable to work in bucket trucks to make repairs during times of high winds.
- PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.
Customer Safety:
- Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Please stay as far away as possible from them, and do not drive over or stand near them. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
- Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
- Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
