Free Trees Power Savings in Honor of Arbor Day

PSEG Long Island and Nassau County join forces for the popular Energy-Saving Trees program

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – April 26, 2023) In honor of Arbor Day on April 28, PSEG Long Island and Nassau County, in partnership with the New York State Urban Forestry Council, the PSEG Foundation and the Arbor Day Foundation, will provide 225 customers in Nassau County with a free tree through the Energy-Saving Trees program. The program showcases how planting the right trees in the right location can reduce utility bills and promote ongoing system reliability.

“Arbor Day is a time to celebrate all the things trees provide for us, and PSEG Long Island likes to celebrate by offering customers trees that provide shade and wind breaks,” said David Lyons, PSEG Long Island’s interim president and chief operating officer. “Strategically planting energy-saving trees helps save up to 20% on summer energy bills once the trees are fully grown, while also improving air quality and reducing storm water runoff for all residents across Long Island.”

The free energy-saving trees were reserved online at www.arborday.org/pseglongisland and be available for pick-up on Friday, April 28, at Parking Field 2 in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. All reserved trees will be held until noon, when they will become available on a first come, first served basis.

“Nassau County is known for our tree-lined roads and parks, and we take pride in maintaining our suburban quality of life, along with the environmental benefits that our trees provide,” said Elaine Phillips, Nassau County comptroller. “Not only do trees provide health and energy benefits, but they literally keep us alive, providing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from our air. We thank PSEG Long Island for helping Nassau County residents continue our shared commitment by providing free trees that beautify and also help reduce energy costs.”

“The Arbor Day Foundation is thrilled to be working with PSEG Long Island again this year. PSEG Long Island has been a long-standing partner since 2016, distributing nearly 5,000 trees to the communities it serves in the Long Island area. This year’s yard tree distribution gives PSEG Long Island a great opportunity to engage with the community,” said Kristen Bousquet, program manager at the Arbor Day Foundation. “This unique project benefits PSEG Long Island, its customers and the communities it serves by finding natural ways to conserve energy. Planting the right trees in the right place can help a homeowner save up to 30% on their electric bill.”

The Energy-Saving Trees online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most strategic location near their homes or businesses. All customers who participate will receive one tree and are expected to care for and plant it in the location provided by the online tool, taking into account utility wires and obstructions. The types of trees offered include the following: red maple, white flowering dogwood, willow oak and scarlet oak.

PSEG Long Island will also be on site at Eisenhower Park to share information about energy saving and financial assistance programs. In addition, they will distribute reusable shopping bags and free LED lightbulbs to save customers money and energy, and to support the environment. Information, shopping bags and lightbulbs are available to all customers. The Energy-Saving Trees must be reserved ahead of time.
