Homes With Electric Heat
Get Free Upgrades
Energy efficiency improvements save money and increase comfort. If you have electric heat, you may be eligible for a free home energy assessment and free efficiency improvements installed on the spot.
In order to mitigate exposure and spread of COVID-19 and be in compliance with the New York State executive order, we have made some temporary changes to our in-home audit programs. PSEG Long Island is doing its part to help slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to all its valued customers and business partners. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period. At this time in-home audit programs are operating with a temporary blower door suspension.
Home heating and cooling are the largest expenses in a typical home.
Unfortunately, many homeowners don't get what they pay for because of problems such as poor insulation, leaky duct work, drafty windows and inefficient appliances. To make sure you get your money’s worth, we offer Home Performance Direct Install, a unique program for customers who have electric heat. The program is designed to:
- Help you reduce overall electricity use
- Save money
- Improve the health and safety of your home
How does the program work?
A contractor accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) will use a number of tests to evaluate your heating and cooling equipment, insulation levels and air infiltration. The contractor will explain what improvements can be made., including opportunities to improve your home’s insulation, heating and cooling systems, windows, appliances and lighting.
The free comprehensive home assessment includes:
- Same-day installations of efficiency measures, such as duct sealing in attics or other areas
- Diagnostic testing to uncover carbon monoxide and/or moisture problems
- Installation of appropriate energy-saving measures to reduce water heating costs (for customers with electric hot water)
- Free replacement of incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs at no cost to you
- A report that contains comprehensive recommendations for further energy-efficiency measures and information about our available rebates

A true, comprehensive energy assessment uses a variety of testing measures to look at your home’s unique features and provide an in-depth audit, including a cost and energy savings estimate. The individual or company conducting a comprehensive energy audit should have the proper licenses and credentials. We have developed a network of independent home improvement contractors who are accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). These contractors take a “whole-house” approach when testing homes and identifying necessary energy efficiency improvements. From air leaks in the attic to your heating system in the basement, your home will be thoroughly reviewed to maximize energy-saving opportunities. In Suffolk County, companies performing or advertising home energy audits must be certified with the Building Performance Institute (BPI), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or the equivalent.

The Building Performance Institute (BPI) is a national resource for building science technology that sets standards for auditing and improving the energy performance, as well as the health and safety of homes. Learn more about BPI on their website.
