PSEG Long Island Donates $10K to Furnish the Girl Scouts of Nassau County ‘Traveling Trefoil’ Van with STEM Gear

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Nov. 9, 2021) On National STEM Day, PSEG Long Island announced it has granted $10,000 to support the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC). Celebrated on Nov. 8, National STEM day is a day to celebrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education throughout the United States. The day focuses on helping students advance in STEM fields.

“PSEG Long Island is excited to assist the Girl Scouts of Nassau County in their efforts to provide access and bring STEM programing to more girls across Nassau County in a mobile format,” said Andrea Elder-Howell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of legal services and president of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County board of directors. “Offering more girls the opportunity to engage in STEM activities opens their minds to an abundance of future career possibilities.”

The PSEG Long Island grant will help furnish the GSNC’s new “Traveling Trefoil” van with hands-on STEM equipment, outdoor activity gear and supplies. The Traveling Trefoil offers Girl Scout opportunities to girls in communities affected by COVID who are unable to take advantage of the Girl Scout programs due to limited family discretionary time, means of transportation, finances, access to technology and language or cultural barriers.

"The Traveling Trefoil initiative is an exciting new tool to help empower Girl Scouts and communities throughout Nassau County,” said Randell M. Bynum, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “It is in our DNA to help our communities. When we noticed external factors might be preventing Girl Scouts from joining programs that enable them to grow personally and professionally, we knew we needed to intervene. We needed an out-of-the-box idea, and we found just that with this van. Thank you to PSEG Long Island for helping to making it possible."

Once the Traveling Trefoil is fully equipped, GSNC will bring Girl Scout activities and staff to help girls work toward earning Girl Scout badges, regardless of family situation. This will also give the girls access to programs that focus on mental well-being, mitigating learning loss, and civic engagement and social change. The Traveling Trefoil will bring Girl Scouts to community centers, parks, school yards, houses of worship and other public spaces across Nassau County, opening up more times and places for girls and their families to participate.

PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program.

“Strong community involvement is a top priority for PSEG Long Island,” Elder-Howell said. “The causes and issues important to our customers mirror those of our company and employees.”

Since 2014, PSEG Long Island employees have donated substantial time and effort on behalf of many charitable causes and activities each year across Long Island and the Rockaways. For more information on how PSEG Long Island supports the communities it serves, visit www.psegliny.com/community.
