Don’t Break a Sweat, Don’t Break the Bank: PSEG Long Island Offers Incentives on Energy Efficient Cooling Systems

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. – June 29, 2020) – If the rising summer temperatures and high humidity are making work from home life or weekend relaxation uncomfortable, PSEG Long Island reminds customers that they can beat the heat at a lower overall cost with rebates on energy-efficient air source heat pumps (ASHP) that will reduce their energy bills for years to come.

“We are offering significant rebates of up to $3,000 for the installation of a typical 3-ton air source heat pump, which means homeowners could save thousands of dollars on a new system,” said Michael Voltz, PSEG Long Island Director of Energy Efficiency. “We like these systems because they are economical and energy efficient alternatives to traditional air conditioning. Long term financial savings and reduction in customers’ carbon footprint are an added bonus.”

ASHPs can be either ducted or ductless. A ducted ASHP can use existing ductwork from a central air conditioning unit. A ductless mini-split system can be installed where there was no AC or to replace a window or through-the-wall unit without the need to install expensive ductwork. These units are small, efficient, quiet and economical.

In addition, ASHPs provide air conditioning and heating in a single unit to provide comfort and savings all year round. Heat pumps are air conditioning systems with reversing valves that allow the single unit to provide both cooling and heating. During warmer months, the heat pump in the cooling mode uses a refrigerant to transfer warm air from inside your home to outside. During colder months, the heat pump operates like an air conditioner in reverse, with the refrigerant transferring warmth from outside to inside the home. For whole house systems, there is a rate discount of about 15 percent for use between October and May.

PSEG Long Island offers valuable rebates on an assortment of compact ASHP models to fit a variety of spaces. The rebates are based on the size and efficiency of the equipment installed. In addition to the rebates, higher efficiency systems also cost less to operate over their lifetime when compared to non-efficient systems.
Homeowners who meet financial eligibility requirements may qualify for enhanced rebates from PSEG Long Island as well as financing through New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). NYSERDA’s “Smart Energy” and “On Bill Recovery” loans provide lower interest rates to lower-income New Yorkers and to those who do not qualify for traditional financing.

Independent annual evaluations by Opinion Dynamics Corporation have found PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs generate energy savings that are cost-effective. In its evaluation for 2019, Opinion Dynamics found that the PSEG Long Island Energy Efficiency Program generated $2.00 in benefits to the utility and its customers for every $1 in costs to operate the program, including rebates.
