Press Release

PSEG Long Island Storm Update — Thursday, July 21, 2022, 6 p.m.

(UNIONDALE, N.Y. — July 21, 2022) Today’s extreme heat has caused scattered outages and this afternoon’s fast-moving weather front brought severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds across Long Island toppling trees, limbs and wires.

  • The hardest-hit areas include Hicksville, Syosset, Woodbury, Holbrook and Brentwood.
  • PSEG Long Island is reporting 6,197 of its approximately 1.1 million customers are currently without service.
  • As of 6 p.m., PSEG Long Island has restored power to more than 12,500 customers since midnight as a result of excessive heat and thunderstorms.
  • During this storm, if necessary, PSEG Long Island activated an enhancement to our outage communications process. Customers may temporarily receive an “Assessing Conditions” message, rather than an estimated time of restoration (ETR). Crews will work to assess damage and make repairs and as specific outage information becomes available, restoration times will be provided.
  • Crews will continue to work through the night and into tomorrow to restore outages safely and as quickly as conditions allow.
  • PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates its customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service.

Customer Safety:

  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Please stay away from them, and do not drive over or stand near them. It is best to maintain a distance of at least 30 feet from a downed power line. To report a downed wire, call 911.
  • Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
  • Never use a generator, pressure washer or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement or garage, or less than 20 feet from any window, door or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
  • PSEG Long Island’s COVID-19-related storm processes that follow public health guidelines and industry best practices remain in place. We thank our customers for their patience as we operate under these unusual circumstances to safely restore power as quickly as possible.
