We launched Earth Week on Monday, April 15, in the Town of Oyster Bay. Followed by Long Beach, Huntington, Brookhaven and Islip through Monday, April 22, Earth Day. Volunteers beautified local parks, gave away LED light bulbs, seed packets and reusable bags at supermarkets, walked through business districts offering free lighting efficiency evaluations, and helped elementary school students learn about energy efficiency!

25 Ways You Can Make a Difference
- A microwave oven is an extremely energy-efficient alternative to a conventional oven. Not only does it cook food faster, it uses 70-80% less electricity.
- When using your oven, choose foods that are cooked at about the same temperature to cook several dishes at the same time.
- Vacuum and clean your refrigerator’s condenser coils twice a year.
- Set your refrigerator to 35-38 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Set your dishwasher to turn off the heat during the drying cycle or open the dishwasher after the rinse cycle to let the dishes air-dry.
- Up to 90% of the energy your clothes washer uses is for heating the water. Today’s detergents work just as well in cold water. Use hot water for heavily soiled loads only.
- For greater efficiency, only run the washer and dryer when you have a full load of laundry.
- Bathing uses the most hot water in the average household. Save energy and water by taking short showers instead of baths.
- Lower your water heater temperature to 120° F (or set to “warm”). You may save even more energy by wrapping an older water heater in a special insulation blanket.
- Use LED bulbs to reduce energy use for lighting by up to 90%, while still getting the same amount of light. They also last a lot longer for years of savings.
- Turn off electronics when they are not in use. Turn off lights if you’ll be out of the room for more than 15 minutes.
- Beware of phantom power – the energy used by many electronics when they’re turned off . Plug multiple devices into a power strip so you can easily shut them off with one switch.
- Don’t set your thermostat at a colder or warmer setting than normal when you first turn on your air conditioner or heater. They won’t work any faster and may end up using more energy.
- A programmable thermostat can automatically raise and lower the temperature according to your lifestyle. A setback of 7-10 degrees from normal for eight hours a day can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling costs.
- Check the filters in your air conditioner or forced hot air heating system monthly and replace or clean them when they become dirty.
- Have your central air conditioner and heating system checked periodically by a properly trained and licensed professional.
- Caulking and weather stripping cracks in walls and floors, windows, and doors will save fuel, electricity, and money.
- Dry air makes you feel colder than moist air at the same temperature. Maintain home humidity in the winter to produce personal comfort at a lower thermostat setting.
- Keep the fireplace damper tightly closed when not in use.
- Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed. Make sure furniture, carpeting, or drapes are not blocking them.
- Ensure that your air conditioning is properly sized for the square footage that needs to be cooled.
- Seal spaces around the room conditioners with caulking to prevent cool air from escaping and hot air from entering.
- Fans can make your air conditioner’s job easier and allow you to raise the temperature by a few degrees without sacrificing comfort.
- To stay comfortable during the hottest hours of the day, do your cooking, ironing, laundry, and bathing in the early morning or late evenings.
- Try to place room air conditioners on the best-shaded sides of your home. A unit exposed to direct sunlight has to work much harder and use more energy.
